new house, new life

Yeah, hi, I know, I’ve been away for ever. My new computer has only been connected to the internet for a week or so, but I didn’t know for sure if I still felt like doing this. But today, apparently, I do.

Yes, we are in the Adelaide Hills now in an old farmhouse surrounded by the houses of all the other members of the family that owns this farm. It’s a lovely house, cavernous after our terrace house in Carlton, and fre-e-ezing when we first arrived. I had to go out in the car in the dark on the day I arrived looking for a bag of firewood. We could see our breath in here even on the second day. And rain! It never stopped for 2 weeks. It turns out Melbourne was having the same kind of weather, not that the Adelaide Hills had been drought free all along.

I go for drinks on Friday night with 2 of my old friends and their spouses, one of whom is also an old friend. Haven’t been able to locate my best pubbing and clubbing friend, though of course if I do we will have to find new ways to amuse ourselves as I approach 50. Everywhere I drive is filled with happy memories. I haven’t made a mistake in coming back.

I have been working on some drawings to advertise my services in the paper and am trying to come up with a business name that feels right for me. I loved the sound of ‘The Studio on Easy Street’ since you may have noticed I’m a big fan of living life the easy way, but Sarah thought it sounded like I would not be taking people’s commissions very seriously and C just didn’t think it sounded right for a design studio. We are playing with ideas now, but it’s taking a while. I don’t want it to sound slick like a lot of hip, young architects do, I want it to be casual, relaxed, welcoming and fun. Mostly fun. Designing flows better if you are having fun with it.

Tonight everyone is coming here for drinks, including a 4-year-old, (maybe she won’t actually be drinking) so my next task is to build a cubby house out of all the cardboard that came wrapped around our new couch. Our house doesn’t have much to entertain a 4-year-old these days. And a fruit platter. Maybe I can make some special shapes to tempt a child.

  2. Hello there Hilary!!!

Are you doing architecture stuff freelance?

    How about “hearthly delights”?

Good to see you back – and thank goodness for feeds.

  3. Hi guys! Lovely to see you again. How did you find me here so quickly when I haven’t even been over and let you know I was back on the blogosphere?

Jayne, I was thinking of you and your beautiful boy last night when I finally started (and almost finished) reading ‘The curious incident of the dog in the nighttime.’ I have stopped where he is having a meltdown in the London Underground and wondered if I should keep going. Don’t tell anyone but I checked the last 2 pages to make sure it was going to have a happy ending. Isn’t the narrative style amazingly accurate! Since our Jaylen doesn’t talk, it just feels to me as though it’s Feral telling the story.

Jeanie that’s brilliant! Since my first idea (which I still secretly like best even if everyone else seems to think it’s all wrong) we haven’t come up with anything as good as that. I will have it on my list when I go to the registration office tomorrow. You should hire yourself out to a PR or advertising firm.
